Real competitive shooting. Not that sissy stuff the rest of you do.

So, The Wife and I went to the range the other day in our continuing quest to get her some increased trigger time now that she is carrying. Well, we got into a bit of an impromptu shooting competition while we were there. This is how it all went down…

When we were about halfway through our session, I decided I was going to try to push her a little bit and really get her focused in on the idea of “aim small; miss small”. So to do this I told her to aim at the small #7 that denotes the #7 ring of that particular target.

“You’ve got five shots… Aim at that #7 and make it disappear”, I told her. She toed the line and took her time with each shot, but the best that she could do was to literally walk each shot all the way around the #7… she pretty much drew a perfect circle around it.

She put the gun down on the bench after the final shot and she was pissed. You see, my wife is an incredibly competitive person (we both are)… So as she saw it those five shots were a complete and total failure. I immediately stepped in and said, “Well, you didn’t make the 7 disappear, but you did in fact improve your groupings significantly. To which she took notice and was a bit more happy with her performance.

Then I loaded another mag in the Glock 26 and said with a smirk, “You want to see that 7 disappear?” … BANG! One shot and the little number 7 was no more. Just a ragged whole that completely erased it from existence.

Now she was really pissed, and the look on her face was priceless. I got to give her a good ribbing about it for the rest of the day, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

So don’t talk to me about the stress level of “real” competitive shooting. Thats not real competitive shooting. Real competitive shooting is when bragging rights with your significant other are on the line, and a real trophy is being able to hang that over their head until the next range trip.

*Don’t worry. I will get my comeuppance, and she will have her day… And when she does, she will give me the business ten times the level of what I gave to her… and Yes, I will be pissed too.

  1. Uh, yeah. Up until now I figured you to be a bright guy. Showing up your wife like that? Not bright. Definitely, not bright!

    1. Scout you took the words right out of my mouth!

Eric, I’m not married and even I know better than to do that! Got to say though that is some really high stakes competition, a rifle match at camp perry has nothing on those stakes!
